Any Madoka fans here?  Gracious, didn't that show make you re-think wanting to be magical girl? o_O I absolutely loved the series, all the characters and the storyline so much!  I even read the manga put out that discussed other magical girls and their tragic stories (and I heavily recommend them all.  One storyline intersects with one of Homura's past timeline failures)

Costume Construction:  The socks were the PERFECT match for Homura and as soon as I saw Chantilly ( chantilly.storenvy.com/ ) selling them, I bought them immediately! The skirt was drafted using The Green Pepper's Ice Skating Pattern ( butterick.mccall.com/filebin/i…; ) which was modified heavily to accommodate fabric that doesn't stretch, as well as that asymmetrical hemline. For the exposed part, I used a black matte satin with a glitter finish.  The underskirt area was printed from Spoonflower using one of their Space designs on Silky Faille fabric ( www.spoonflower.com/fabric/262… ).  I took apart two gorgeous black feather boas and hand stitched on every single feather.  The back of the skirt has a peek a boo opening to show off the black glitter fabric.  The applique lace on the back of the skirt was bought off of Etsy and is gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.  And also hand stitched on.

The corset was used with Simplicity's Pattern # 1728 ( s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/7… ) and fit so gorgeously that it's going to be my Go To pattern for corsets from now on. The inside of the corset is lined with strong black cotton fabric and is boned with steel wire boning.  The outside fabric was done in black bridal satin.
I had to modify the bustline to get a sweetheart look, and to simulate the cutouts on the side and front of the dress, I layered beige fabrics on each other and heat sealed the ends with my solder tool.  I handstitched the beige cut outs on and stitched on more gorgeous black applique that I bought off of Etsy.

For the necklace I had a bottom layer of sheer ribbon and a top layer of satin ribbon.  Between the layers I put in more rooster feathers and stitched them all together, heat sealing the ends with my solder tool.  I had bought a necklace from Claires and painted it black, disassembled it and stitched it on top of the ribbon necklace.  For extra oomph, I bought some filigreed clock hands from Hobby Lobby ( s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/2… ) decorated one of the hands with black rhinestone and added it to the necklace, as it would fit the theme of the character.  The headband was bought from Claires and I hot glued on red fabric and made a quick bow with the red satin and heavy interfacing fabric.  The gloves were bought from Claires as well.  ;)

The wings were made referencing Jia Jem's Online Wing Tutorial ( jiajem.com/tutorials/wings/ ).  9 gauge steel wire was shaped for the harness and the wing shape.  I bought two 5' black garden hoses from Walmart, cut off the brass ends and fed them through the wire.  The fluffy white part of the wings are thick pieces of craft foam sandwiching in black turkey feathers (both bought from Hobby Lobby) with white tinseled feather boas (bought from JoAnn Fabrics) hot glued on top. The design of the wings allow for me to shape them into either an extended position or a pre/mid flight look.  I prefer the upward extended look for it's dramatic visuals and less propensity to hit people in the head when I walk by. ♥

Overall:  I absolutely love how dark and dramatic this looks!  I haven't done villainous design in awhile and kind of miss it: I'm such a real life Princess Good Girl it feels good to be in the Dark Side from time to time ;)  I realize that I still have a LOT to learn about designing and making wings and look forward to more challenges to do so!
